Research & Activities

Research
Our members’ research spans many disciplinary fields and areas in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and includes platform governance, visual social media research, game studies, health informatics, digital fashion, digital harms, and digital environmental sustainability. In addition, we have several areas which we explore collectively. These are:
- Creative methods
- Critical AI literacies
- Queer digital cultures
Programmes
DISC runs multiple research programmes, mostly online or in hybrid format:
- Visiting Fellowships. We have several Visiting schemes, including funded, self-funded and Virtual Fellowships
- Summer School. Our annual online Summer School offers annual events, activities and masterclasses, focusing on different aspects of digital politics, society and culture.
- Digital Policy Observatory. Digital Policy Observatory is our new, visionary initiative, to address digital policy through critical, global and interdisciplinary lens. Set up in partnership with CDEP (Center for Digital Ethics & Policy) Loyola University, Chicago, and its Director, Prof. Florence Chee, the Observatory welcomes international scholars to work together on critical research and policy interventions around digital technologies.

Public Engagement
DISC members actively collaborate with local and national organisations, groups and communities. In the last two years, as part of AEAD – we have engaged with Manchester Cathedral and Manchester-based organisations to support visual AI literacy and combat AI-driven misinformation.
