About

DISC was launched in 2021, when we officially became a Faculty research group, bringing together activities and conversations between staff members in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and across Manchester Metropolitan University. Drawing on the “Digital Transformations” research cluster established by Adi Kuntsman in 2015 and developing the work carried out by Tom Brock and Adi Kuntsman to promote digital sociology in 2016-2020, DISC is now a vibrant, interdisciplinary collective of established and junior scholars and doctoral researchers. Our publications are at the forefront of current academic debates on digital society; and our public engagement activities bring pioneering research to communities, organisations and policy makers, in Manchester, the UK and internationally. We regularly welcome international visitors, and run multiple collaborative initiatives, with other researchers at the Faculty and with international partners.
International Partnerships
In 2025 we have partnered with CDEP (Center for Digital Ethics & Policy) Loyola University, Chicago, and its Director, Prof. Florence Chee to work together on research and policy interventions around digital technologies.

Internal Collaborations
We collaborate regularly with other research groups across the Faculty, namely Manchester Game Centre and Contemporary Intimacies, Sexualities & Genders (CISG) research group to explore how digital technologies and especially AI are shaping the experience of gaming and transform sexual relations and intimacies.
