Seeing Through the Machine: Visual AI Tools for Research, Creativity, and Critical Practice
June 26 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Masterclass with Dr Sam Martin
26 June 10am-12noon , online (Teams)
What you’ll learn:
This interactive workshop introduces academics to the expanding world of visual generative AI tools. Led by Dr Sam Martin, digital sociologist and AI artist, the session explores how platforms such as MidJourney, Leonardo.ai, Krea.AI, and Runway ML can be used critically and creatively in academic contexts—from visualising research findings and generating speculative visual data, to interrogating AI bias, aesthetics, and misinformation.
Participants will gain:
- A practical understanding of key visual AI tools and interfaces
- Critical awareness of image generation bias, AI aesthetics, and ethics
- Ideas for integrating visual AI into research, teaching, or public engagement
- Tips for prompt engineering and collaborative image creation
- A brief discussion of copyright, attribution, and academic use-cases
Whether you’re curious about creative dissemination, building speculative futures into your research, or exploring the politics of AI imagery, this session will help you navigate the rapidly evolving visual AI landscape.
Pre-requisites:
No coding experience required. A working laptop is preferred.
If you’d like to try generating images live, please be ready to log in to provided workshop accounts on one or more of the following: MidJourney, Leonardo.ai, Krea.AI, or Runway ML.
Access to these platforms will be provided on the day and for five days following the workshop.
